Every once in a while a session just runs. No coaxing, no awkward silences, no one staring at me waiting to be told what to do next. Rebecca and Anthony's engagement session at Borderland State Park in North Easton, MA was one of those mornings. These two showed up at eight o'clock in the morning with enough energy and humor to power the whole day. They were laughing before I even got my first frame off. The whole session, from the shaded forest paths to the open meadow to the pond, they were either cracking each other up or trying to. It made my job very easy and a lot of fun.


Starting in the Forest

We kicked things off in the woods while the sun was still low. The tree canopies were full and green, which kept most of the direct light off us, but every so often there were these small pools of warm sunlight breaking through. We worked around those. A few more composed poses to start, just to get comfortable and establish a rhythm, and then things loosened up fast. With Rebecca and Anthony, 'loosened up' happened quicker than most.

The Volleyball Match

I always ask couples what they like to do together. Not for small talk. The answer tells me what kind of movement and energy I'm going to get on camera. When Rebecca and Anthony said volleyball, I filed that away immediately.

Out in the open meadow, I handed them a ball and stepped back. These two play. They kept it in the air, back and forth, no dropped sets, full competitive focus. Rebecca's game face showed up fast. That combination of real athletic effort and genuine affection between two people who are also clearly trying to beat each other made for some of the most interesting frames of the day.

Leach Pond

After the outfit change we made our way over to the pond. The pace dropped, the energy shifted. Still plenty of smiling, but quieter. The water and the late-morning light gave us something softer to work with, and the two of them settled into it naturally.

The Finale

We closed the session with a piggyback ride through the field. At some point Rebecca covered Anthony's eyes while he was running. I still don't fully understand how that ended without anyone on the ground. It was chaotic and them.

What made this session work wasn't any single location or any particular shot. It was that I'd give Rebecca and Anthony the smallest prompt, and they'd run with it in six different directions, laughing the whole time. I barely had to direct. I just had to keep up.
